Název projektu:
Biocomposites with feather keratin (11 PL 61AK 3LZX)
Popis:
A team of Polish researchers developed a very unique method of producing fibrous composite materials in form of fibres and sponges. Modification of chitosan, alginate and cellulose fiber materials by feather keratin is a novelty. All these materials have been manufactured after keratin extraction from the raw material. Also a "paper-like product" has been developed using feathers together with another waste material. Partners from industry for license agreement are sought.
Country: Poland Type: OFFER Date: 13.07.2011
Natural polymers and keratin obtained from chicken feathers were used. Keratin wastes are a potential renewable starting material. A method of manufacturing fibrous composite materials by wet spinning was exploited. Spinning solutions were prepared from these polymers, and after filtration and aeration they were used for fibres and fibrids formation. The process of manufacturing fibrids and fibres both including keratin was investigated. The investigations included:" preparing spinning solutions with different keratin contents," estimating the influence of the formation speed and the drawing on the fibre properties," estimating sorption, biological properties and biodegradability of the obtained composites.
Alternative technology concentrated on extra-fragmentation and without chemical treatment leads to a paper-like product, made of keratin supplemented with waste paper . The article has already been appreciated by painters. A manufacturing of paper like composite materials by paper method is presented. They used chicken feather fibers and cotton linters in different compositions:" 50% chicken feather fibers and 50% cotton linters and 10% synthetic fibres in relation to the whole mass" 66% chicken feather fibers and 34% cotton linters and 10% synthetic fibres in relation to the whole mass
Paper-like materials were manufactured using a paper laboratory machine (G.S.M. 110g/m2).
Innovative Aspects:
A very unique method has been developed for "paper-like product". In this case feathers are used to produce composites with another waste material. Application of a feathers for the production of paper is a very original concept, opening a wide field for experimentation and interdisciplinary scientific research. It is also a way to search for new methods of solving problems relating to the production of agricultural waste - food and industrial.
"Keratin paper" is a material with specific structure which may be very useful in a creative artistic processes being an excellent material for unique works performed in mixed original techniques. The possibility of using this type of paper products for art and the wider artistic activities can be one of the forms of publicity of the new technology.
Biocomposites with keratin (sulfur protein) show a better sorption and biostatic properties. Therefore they may be used in medical treatment as dressing material.
