A US global tool manufacturer, invites proposals for materials or composites with high rigidity, strength, and damping performance, to be used for shanks (shafts) of internal cutting tools. Damping performance improvements relate to the material's ability to absorb vibration during use. In particular, technologies using carbon fiber are expected, but proposals for alloys, composite materials, ceramics, or other materials also are of interest.
The company is developing small-diameter cutting tools that do not generate undesirable chatter (self-excited vibration) even for a large overhang.
In general, small-diameter tools suppress chatter vibration by using cemented carbide with excellent stiffness for the tool shank. However, at the present time, even with cemented carbide, a high degree of overhang of more than 5 to 8 times the diameter can lead to excessive chatter vibration, which makes it unusable for deep hole machining. Yet, carbon fiber, which is light and strong, has gained attention recently as a damping material of high strength, and materials based on carbon fiber have been developed especially for aerospace and automotive applications. Alloys and composite materials of high damping performance have been developed actively as well.
Therefore, believing that the desired technology is widely known throughout the world, the company has issued this technical request in order to acquire a promising technology more quickly and establish an early dominance in the market.
The company anticipates acquiring the necessary technology from organizations that already possess it, or receiving promising development proposals based on joint development or contract development.

- Can be formed into the following shapes:
*Shape: cylindrical rod or pipe
*Size:
- Diameter (D): 10 mm
- Overhang (L): 100 mm
- Total length: about 200 mm
- Have the following properties for the above diameter (D) and overhang (L):
* Withstanding load: 3,000 N
* Withstanding torque: 18 N·m
* Deflection: = 1.5 mm for an applied load of 1,500 N
* Logarithmic decrement: = 0.1
Proposals are welcomed, even if the above requirements are not satisfied at the present time,if they can be met within one year with additional development.
