A large US company is looking for proposals for innovative drive systems that can provide user-controlled transport for light loads using rechargeable or renewable power sources. They are interested in licensing, product acquisition, contract research, proof of concept leading to scale up to manufacturing, joint development, supplier agreement.
Drive systems for light motorized transport have undergone only incremental advances in the past thirty years. There are numerous applications for these systems, including motorized wheelchairs, golf carts and children toys.
The company seeks to identify and develop novel technologies that will efficiently drive motorized transport in a controlled manner, using power sources that are rechargeable or regenerative. Such a drive system will be self-contained and mounted on a platform that moves on wheels. Successful solutions must be able to ensure user safety through measures such as a maximum speed cut-off, active braking when not accelerating, and reliable minimum drive period.
The company is strongly interested in approaches that have strong supporting evidence, or are readily demonstrable. Conceptual approaches are not of interest.
Possible approaches might include, but are not limited to:
- Continuously variable drive systems/transmissions.
The following approaches are not of interest:
- Systems that are not fully contained (ie requires a tether or permanent connection to an external power source)
- Any approach that is powered by gasoline, diesel fuel, combustible fuels, or other hazardous materials
- Approaches that do not have a clear path towards commercialization.
Technical Specifications / Specific technical requirements:
The successful technology will:
- Be suitable for use by the general consumer
- Move a load of at least 200 pounds (in excess of the system itself)
- Provide a minimum of 45 minutes of drive time at maximum speed and load
- Be capable of moving at several adjustable speeds (up to 5 mph), including reverse
- Cost less than $30 total for the drive mechanism, power source, and recharging system
- Operate without use of gasoline, diesel fuel, propane, or other hazardous materials
- Be capable of controlled deceleration when not actively driving forwards or backwards
- Be fully chargeable or regenerated in ‹14 hours, in a typical home environment
- Be rechargeable or renewable for at least 300 cycles
- Accommodate wheel diameters ranging from 6-13 inches
- Provide 0.3 0.5 hp to the system.
