Název projektu:
Manufacturing of new products by injecting water-soluble and biodegradable plastics (07 ES SERT 0HYL)
Popis:
A Spanish SME, main producer of water-soluble and biodegradable plastics, has developed a production process by which it is possible to obtain pellets of this material that can be used for the manufacturing of different products by using an injection system. The company is interested in establishing technical co-operation agreements in order to develop new injected products.
Nowadays there is a worldwide awareness, especially among the European Union countries, concerning the necessity to reduce the environmental problems generated by industrial processes. In this sense, research constantly focuses on the development of new formulations of biodegradable materials, more environment-friendly.
The use of biodegradable plastics as a substitutive of traditional plastics in several applications could be a key factor in the management of urban and rural solid waste.
A Spanish company develops biodegradable plastics based on polyvinyl alcohol (PVOH), which is a non-toxic, water-soluble and biodegradable synthetic polymer. It has good thermal stability, so that it can be processed easily. Its mechanical properties are notable, as well as its chemical resistance to different solvents.
It is also possible to modify its formulation depending on the water temperature in which the material should dissolve. The biodegradation of the plastic component due to the combined action of rain, environmental humidity and oxygen produces the disappearance, in short time periods, of pieces that couldn't have been recovered from the environment in which they have been used.
The company has developed a production process by which it is possible to obtain pellets of this material as a semi-finished product that, thanks to its interesting properties and technical characteristics, can be used for the manufacturing of different products by using an injection system.
Following this process the company has developed a funerary urn, the formulation of which allows complete dissolution, even in cold water. They dissolve after two days in cold water (5-10 ºC).
The funerary urn consists of two pieces, the body and the cap (see figure), and due to its water-solubility and biodegradable properties can not only be used in conventional burial but also be thrown to water, solving the existing problems in the ports where the accumulation of traditional urns is very usual and sight-unpleasant.
The company is interested in finding new applications. Their intention is to develop jointly new products obtained by injecting the water-soluble material, according to the partner's needs.
Innovative Aspects:
The main innovation of this product (pellets) is that it can be used for the injection process, whereas the already existing biodegradable polymers, due to their poor physical-mechanical properties, are not suitable.
Nowadays, the technologies that are being used for processing of these materials are extrusion and extrusion-blow moulding.
Main advantages of these materials are:
- Water-soluble (environment-friendly)
- Non-toxic.
- Thermally stable.
- Good mechanical properties.
- Chemical-resistant to different solvents.
