A University from Northern Germany has developed a measuring unit for the measurement of movements especially in rotor and linear machines. The novel unit is embedded in a film material placed in the air gap between the stator and the rotor of a machine in order to detect the rotor's rotation speed or position. This way no external unit is needed. Companies are sought who are interested in the further co-development for industrial applications or in buying either the patent or a licence.
During the operation of electrical motors, especially in high quality applications, it is often necessary to measure the rotor's position or speed. Normally this is done by connecting an external encoder or speed indicator to the motor shaft.
The new system consists of measurement coils which are embedded in a film material. The coils are arranged in only one layer so that the required space for the installation is minimal. Thus the component can be placed into the existing air gap between the stator and the rotor of a machine. If applicable the coils can also be integrated directly into the stator's surface. By the rotation of the rotor a charge is induced into the measurement coils which can be used to determine the speed of the rotation and the position of the rotor.
The innovation was developed by an institute of a University from Northern Germany. Its research activities are focused on electrical machines and electrical motors.
Innovative Aspects:
The novelty resides in the specific arrangement of the measurement coils on the film material. They are arranged in a single layer, thus reducing space requirements to a minimum which makes it possible to position the component directly in the air gap of a motor.
Therefore the cost of a separate device can be saved, with no impairment of the measurement quality. The accuracy of the measurements satisfies the most stringent requirements. Also the repair and maintenance costs can be reduced significantly.
The specific circuitry of the unit allows to perform measurements even if the induced charge is very low.
