Název projektu:
Microwave photochemical reactor (11 IT 55W4 3LIF)
Popis:
An Italian research laboratory specialised in the study of microwave technologies for industrial applications has developed and patented a novel type of chemical reactor excited with microwave power, utilising microwave immersion antennas. Development and commercialisation of the technology are required.
The microwave reactors are useful and versatile devices of recent development. They are characterised by high efficiency and easy operations. Actually the microwave chemistry methodology makes use of special non-metal reaction vessels placed inside metal cavities, typically a microwave oven resonator.
The novelty of this patent is given by the possibility of excitation of the reactants by the inside, through one or many coaxial microwave probes or antennas, without the need of placing a non metal reactor inside a closed metal cavity. This can be obtained introducing a special thin antenna in a coaxial structure, made out of laboratory glass or transparent fused quartz, or suitable plastic material. The microwaves are emitted under continuous wave or pulsed regime. The electric field, typically at the frequency of 2450 MHz, efficiently interacts with the molecular absorbing species increasing the temperature.
Innovative Aspects:
The innovative idea consists of the possibility of performing microwave assisted chemistry using continuous or pulsed microwave power, without placing the reactor vessel inside a metal multimode resonant cavity (oven) or monomode waveguide. Moreover the reactor vessel can be of conventional design, made out of whatsoever material, so that also high-pressure reactions are possible using pressurised metal wall reactors.
The technology enables construction of low-cost equipments for applications of microwave-assisted chemistry of scientific and industrial interest. Advantages are given by the possibility of using off the shelf glassware, adding more visual and manual access to the reaction. Another important advantage is given by the possibility of using, within limits, metal devices, parts or sensors inside the mass of the reactants. These operating conditions are difficult or impossible to reach using commercialised technologies.
