A large US company is looking for proposals for applications that enable camera equipped mobile devices to measure and identify the surface features of small appliances.
They are interested in product acquisition, contract research and development, joint development, supplier agreement.

Sophisticated applications have made mobile phones and tablets extremely powerful and flexible tools. When combined with their ubiquitous presence, mobile devices have become a convenient tool for performing a variety of functions.
Manufactures of small appliances can reduce costs and provide more environmentally friendly packaging by using electronic rather than paper instruction manuals. However, many global products have subtle market-specific features that make it difficult to identify the correct model.
The goal of this request is to develop a mobile device application that can accurately measure the front and back panels of an appliance to unambiguously identify its exact features, components and product model even if there are less than millimeter changes in the position of these features.
Possible approaches might include, but are not limited to:
-Mobile software applications
-Computer vision technologies.
The following approaches are not of interest:
-Approaches that require physical modification of the mobile device
-Approaches that require jailbreaking the OS
-Any approach that would void the warranty of the mobile device.
Technical Specifications / Specific technical requirements:
The successful technology will enable mobile devices to:
-Recognize objects or features from an established library
-Automatically measure and map the surface features of the object suck as Knobs, electronic displays, receptacles
-Correctly recognize receptacles without removing attached wires and plugs
-Map features with an accuracy of 1 mm or less
-Preferably generate surface map without using external calibration (e.g.) based on known sizes of objects in library.
Additional features:
-Be easy to use (i.e.) not require complicated user interactions or programming
-Be able to generate the map quickly (in near real time)
-Be compatible with Google Android and Apple iOS mobile phones and tablets
-Preferably be usable indoors under ambient light conditions.
