Název projektu:
Simple and inexpensive analytical technique to identify fecal odors (10 BE 0213 3I8C)
Popis:
A multinational active in the consumer goods sector looks for simple and inexpensive analytical technique(s) to identify fecal odors, as a low-cost alternative to the well established but complex and expensive currently used methods. Belgian company is open to various types of partnerships depending on the state of development and Intellectual property position of the offered solution.
In many materials the presence of malodors can significantly reduce the consumer acceptance of a product. Fecal odors in particular are a key contributor to the overall malodor profile of certain materials. There are different analytical methods by which the level of different malodor compounds can be measured.
One of these techniques SPME-GC-MS (solid phase micro extraction (SPME)/ gas chromatography (GC)/mass spectrometry (MS)) is a well established technique that can be used effectively to detect the different malodor compounds.
By using this technique it can be seen that the overall fecal malodor comes from compounds such as short chain acids (3-methyl butyric acid, butanoic acid, and acetic acid), phenols (p-cresol), and indoles (indole, skatole).
While SPME-GC-MS is an effective technique, it requires considerable investment and a high level of expertise to run and maintain the equipment.
As a consequence, this multinational looks for an analytical technique that is capable of effectively identifying fecal odors and is relatively simple, quick and inexpensive.
The solution could be presented in the form of a test "kit" or sensor with accompanying data to show its effectiveness. A second possibility is to provide a technical proposal describing the method with supporting data to show the effectiveness.
In terms of scale/volume, the expected number of tests per year could range from 3000 to 5000.
In terms of Intellectual Property position, the company prefers patented solutions but it is not compulsory. At a minimum the company needs freedom to practice.
The company is open to various types of partnerships depending on the state of development and Intellectual property position of the offered solution.
Technical Specifications / Specific technical requirements:
The offered solution(s) should be able to detect different levels of fecal odor ranging from low (i.e. undetectable by the human nose) to medium and high (i.e. presents an unacceptable odor to the human nose) and meet the following requirements:
- relatively inexpensive - where a gas chromatography (GC) would be on the higher end of the cost spectrum.
- relatively simple such that someone with basic lab skills could execute.
- relatively fast the test could be executed in approximately one hour.
